چکیده

Learning by observation allows a software agent to learn by watching an expert perform a task. This transfers the burden of training from the expert, who would traditionally need to program the agent, to the agent itself. Most existing approaches to learning by observation perform their observation in a purely passive manner. We propose a case-based reasoning agent that is able to observe passively but can also use mixedinitiative control to request assistance from the expert for difficult input problems. Our agent uses mixedinitiative case acquisition in the game of Tetris. We show that the agent is able to obtain cases it would not have been able to with passive observation alone, is able to improve its performance and places less burden on

agents, assuming they work independently, or they can achieve the same goals more effectively. Mixed initiative assumes an efficient, natural interleaving of contributions by users and automated agents that is determined by their relative knowledge and skills and the problem-solving context, rather than by fixed roles, enabling each participant to contribute what it does best, at the appropriat...

Seven Aspects of Mixed-Initiative Reasoning: An Introduction to the Special Issue on Mixed-Initiative Assistants

Mixed-initiative assistants are agents that interact seamlessly with humans to extend their problem solving capabilities or provide new capabilities. Developing such agents requires the synergistic integration of many areas of AI, including knowledge representation, problem solving and planning, knowledge acquisition and learning, multi-agent systems, discourse theory, and human-computer intera...

Using computer simulation to compare two models of mixed-initiative

In this paper, we use computer simulation to better understand mixed-initiative dialogues. We compare two models of mixed-initiative: unrestricted initiative, where either participant can take over control at any point; and restricted initiative where one participant keeps control and the other plays a secondary role, but greater than what single-initiative allows. We find that restricted initi...

Agent Learning for Mixed-Initiative Knowledge Acquisition

This research has advanced the Disciple learning and problem solving theory for rapid development and maintenance of adaptable cognitive assistants in uncertain and dynamic environments. These assistants can capture, use, preserve, and transfer to other users the subject matter expertise which currently takes years to establish, is lost when experts separate from service, and is costly to repla...

Evaluation of Mixed-Initiative Knowledge Base Development Methods and Tools

This paper presents a general framework for the empirical evaluation of mixed-initiative knowledge base development methods and tools. It also illustrates it with a knowledge acquisition experiment performed to validate a mixedinitiative method for acquiring problem solving rules directly from a subject matter expert. The main feature of this framework is that the evaluation is an integral part...
